![Souvenir Mining Spoon Front Gold Coin Mine Victor CO.JPG - SOUVENIR MINING SPOON GOLD COIN MINE VICTOR CO - Sterling silver souvenir spoon, gold washed bowl engraved with mining scene and buildings and marked GOLD COIN GOLD MINE VICTOR COLO, spoon in the form of a shovel and having a rope wrapped handle on which is affixed a pick, shovel, and moveable windlass crank at top and an ore bucket and nugget at bottom, back is marked Sterling, 5 3/4 inch long, 0.8 troy oz, ca. 1890s [The Woods family, founders of Victor, Colorado, struck a rich vein of gold while excavating for the foundation of a hotel at 4th & Diamond Avenue in 1894. This vein became the Gold Coin Mine, one of the richest mines in the Cripple Creek District. With this stroke of luck and fortune, the hotel was built at a new location. Partners Charles L. Tutt, Spencer Penrose and Charles M. MacNeill purchased the Gold Coin Mine in the center of Victor in 1902 and renamed it the Granite Mine. Remnants of the mine, as well as the Gold Coin Club built for the mine’s workers, have been preserved and can still be seen in Victor.
